SICKLE CELL SCREEN, HEMOGLOBIN S
The sickle cell solubility test is a qualitative test based on the relative insolubility of hemoglobin S compared to other hemoglobin variants. A positive test indicates the presence of hemoglobin S or a non-S sickling hemoglobin. Results should be confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography.
It is important to detect Hb-S in order to determine which individuals are at risk of crisis when exposed to prolonged anoxia such as may occur during surgery, athletic programs or high altitude conditions.
Sickle cell disease-is a group of inherited RBC disorders. The disease is named for the C-shaped farming tool known as a sickle.
Sickle cells often become hard and sticky. This can increase the risk of blood clots. They also tend to die off early. This causes a constant shortage of RBCs.
