OH-Progesterone; 17-Alpha-Hydroxprogesterone; 17-OHP
17-Hydroxyprogesterone - 17-Hydroxyprogesterone is elevated in patients with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). CAH is a group of autosomal recessive diseases characterized by a deficiency of cortisol and an excess of ACTH concentration.
A 17-OHP test helps diagnose a rare genetic disorder called congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). In CAH, a genetic change, known as a mutation, prevents the adrenal gland from making enough cortisol. As the adrenal glands work harder to make more cortisol, they produce extra 17-OHP, along with certain male sex hormones.
The analysis of 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHPG) is 1 of the 3 analytes along with cortisol and androstenedione, that constitutes the best screening test for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), caused by either 11- or 21-hydroxylase deficiency.
